The SAT Prep class places great emphasis on community service and volunteerism as part of the course. The class began this year with visits to The Cottage of Spring Branch, a memory care center.
Our students have found that not only do the senior residents benefit from their visits, but they do as well. This kind of experiential learning allows the students to apply what they have learned in the classroom and apply it in real life. Through their volunteer experiences, they have a better understanding of the value of teamwork as well as gaining a better perspective of the community around them, and what life is about for a group that is often overlooked. They have found that volunteerism provides them with:
Making a difference in the world and gaining a sense of purpose. We have gained the understanding that our visits provide help keep feelings of isolation and loneliness at a minimum. We gain a unique perspective about generations. It reminds us of our grandparents back home.
