Thank you Jessica Cao for asking the SAT Prep class to help the Mercer Arboretum with their greenhouses!
Mercer Arboretum is located 22306 Aldine Westfield Road, Humble Texas. The botanic gardens are located on either side of Aldine Westfield road. The east side is 20-acres of botanical gardens filled with endangered species, beautiful annuals, perennials, herbs, bamboo, and tropicals, to name a few. You can walk along the trails and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere with beautifully maintained gardens. The west side of the road is a park with playgrounds with walking trails.
The arboretum maintains several greenhouses throughout the north Houston area that help keep the gardens plush. Mercer Arboretum did not escape the wrath of hurricane Harvey. One of their greenhouses called Mercers’ Northside Greenhouses flooded extensively. The Arboretum depends totally on volunteers.
The SAT Prep class was asked to help with the Jungle Greenhouse, which grows tropicals and rare plants from all around the world. The greenhouse had knee-high weeds throughout and needed much attention. The students jumped right in under the direction of the only employee for the greenhouse facility, Brandon Hubbard and his helper Jacob, who is employed by the main arboretum on Aldine Westfield.
The students worked hard for 3 straight hours pulling weeds, pruning and organizing the plants. The photo gallery below shows their hard work and teamwork. The students finished up their day with lunch at Puffabelly’s in Old Town Spring and leisurely walk through the arboretum. A great time and gratification were felt by all!
It felt great helping out! Teamwork! We really enjoyed all the hard work. It reminds me of my homeland. Lunch was great! We learned a lot about plants. We are so tired!
